CHRISTMAS AT 81

Got a Christmas card from my son, he wrote two big lines
Said Merry Christmas Mama, hope this card gets there fine
He don’t ever call me , cept on my birthday
Guess he’s checking to see if I’m still alive, never has much to say
Got an card from my daughter, said a package is in the mail
There’s a chance it might be late, with our Post Office you can never tell
She’ll try to call Christmas Day, when the rates are low
She knows I’ll be home waiting, I got no where else to go
Chorus
Christmas supposed to be the happiest day of the year
When all the family gathers around to celebrate good cheer
I guess I should be thankful my grandkids even remember me
But Christmas time at 81, ain’t what’s it’s cracked up to be
I remember Christmas a child, back before the war
I take all the money from my piggy bank, go down to the store
I’d get my Mama a simple gift, the best my little money could buy
Take it home and wrap it with love, just to see my Mama’s eyes
Spoken
Its been nearly 40 years since we were all together at Christmas time
We’ve been spread over 4000 miles since 1969
They’ve got their own families to raise and I’m not the only one who’s alone
But I dream around Christmas time someday they’re all come home
2nd Chorus
Christmas supposed to be the happiest day of the year
When all the family gathers around to celebrate good cheer
I guess I should be thankful my grandkids even remember me
But Christmas time at 81, ain’t what’s it’s cracked up to be
TAG: Lord knows, Christmas time at 81, ain’t what’s it’s cracked up to be
